SUPERB VAAKJE HEIFER HEADS BEESTON MID MONTH AT £2750.

The August edition of the Famous Wright Manley Mid Month Sale of pedigree and commercial dairy cattle attracted an entry of almost 400 head forward on the day with a virtual clearance being achieved. Buyers were present from Cumbria to Oxfordshire and to West Wales and just about every county in between. Trade was more than satisfactory in most sections, in the dairy ring there were over 30 animals selling for £2000 or more.

COWS AND MILKING HEIFERS

The ring was much busier with many more people present than had been at the last two sales and several new customers were very active. Trade for heifers was very similar with averages being little different to last month. However cow trade was hard work except for the best and although averages were well down reflecting the quality forward which it has to be said was not up to the usual standard.

The days top price went to Jack and Barclay Taylor of Myddle, Shrewsbury for their homebred heifer Burnbrae Sam Vaakje, a daughter of Mr. Sam bred from 10 generations of Excellent cows from the Stardale Vaakje family. The purchaser was John Williamson of Nantwich. The Taylors had several of the leading prices and also sold at £2400 for Burnbrae Classic Snowboots to Richard Taylor of Church Eaton, Stafford, at £2350 for the red and white Burnbrae Twister Patricia Red going to D & H E Colclough & Son of Hassall, Sandbach with other at £2280 and £220 twice. The Colclough’s were very active at the top end of the market also purchasing Tarporley Rudolph Actress at £2450, the second highest priced heifer, from EV & Boughey & Son of Tarporley, Lachstone Ellrod Kindle by UFM Dubs Ellrod from J & TJN Platt of Lach Dennis, Northwich for £2350 and Wigland Gerard Portia from J Bowden & Co., Malpas for £2250.

A big entry of over 100 cows forward saw no less than seven break the £2000 mark with the top price being £2320 for the outstanding second calver Parkhead Spooky Candy from AJ & MA Knowles of Woodplumpton, Preston selling to the Colclough’s. The second top selling cow was Timberlane Homestead Welcome 2nd consigned as part of the gradual dispersal of the of WA & D Dutton’s Herd based at Knutsford who sold for £2150 to Russell Evans of Clarbeston Road, Pembrokeshire.

IN CALF HEIFERS

A super entry of over 80 in-calf heifers sold on the fastest trade of the day in front of a large crowd in Ring 2. The top price was £2000 which was achieved on two occasions and both for heifers consigned by MJ & MR Monckton of Sandbach. The first at this figure was a Willsbro Red Razzle daughter selling to C & S Fitton & Son, Middlewich and the second was a Stantons Steady daughter selling to G Green & Son, Northwich. Lord Rayleighs Farms Ltd of Chelmsford Essex sold 17 autumn calvers up to £1880; JW Padfield Farms of Romford Essex sold up to £1800 and WF Farms of Canterbury topped their consignment at £1750.

MAIDEN HEIFERS

There was only a small entry of maidens and these were dominated by a lovely group of 20 Montbeliarde crosses from Messrs Rome of Canonbie which sold to a top of £880 for a Nikos daughter out of an 11000 kg dam. Holstein yearlings sold to £740 for a Cedarwal Spirte from MT & JE Hassall & Sons of Tarporley.

HEIFER CALVES

The most disappointing trade of the day was in this section where heifer calves appeared to be great value for money. Top price was £400 achieved twice both for daughters of Jeeves from WA & D Dutton & Sons of Knutsford

STOCK BULLS

Just three forward with two Herefords selling for £1980 and £1900 and a Limousin at £1500.
