MID MONTH TRADE SEES HEIFERS RISE TO £2800

The Wright Manley Famous Mid Month Sale at Beeston Castle Auction, Cheshire attracted a catalogued entry of 474 head of dairy cattle for its monthly collective sale of pedigree and commercial dairy cattle, of which 430 head were forward on the day and only 10 animals failed to find new homes. In the milking sections trade was quite a bit dearer on the month especially for the better individuals, but it has to be said there were a lot of good heifers in the sale this month. Generally in-calf heifers and young stock not as dear, except for the very best, and heifer calves were dearer.

COWS AND MILKING HEIFERS

Quality was really good in the heifers and reasonably good in cows with plenty of bidding for the best. A total of 45 head sold for £2000 or more which is fantastic and 12 of these were £2400 or more. The top seller once again went to a heifer from the Burnbrae stable of Jack and Barclay Taylor at Myddle, Shrewsbury who sold their leading lot at £2800 to T Sadler & Son, Wem. This was for Burnbrae Classic Recsie Red, a daughter of Poos Stadel Classic with an Excellent g.dam. The Taylors also sold at £2600 for Burnbrae Matson Cactus to D & HE Colclough & Son, Hassall, Sandbach who also purchased another Classic daughter at £2450 and a Bassingthorpe Laxton daughter at £2400 from the same home.

Regular vendors EV & B Boughey & Son of Tarporley topped their consignment at £2550 for a daughter of their stock bull, Clayden Rudolph selling to HR Taylor & Son of Church Eaton, Stafford whilst other regular vendors Mark and Ann Bowden of Malpas topped their sales at £2500 for a homebred daughter of Cogent Loader selling to Rob Ward of Whitchurch.

David Monk of Ormskirk had a beautiful pair heifers forward with his best selling at £2450 for a Roylane Jordan heifer selling to Richard Williams, Wrinehill, Crewe and at the same money Simon and Clare Powell of Burlton, Shrewsbury topped their consignment of six heifers for a daughter of Jeeves selling to the Colclough’s. The Boughey’s also sold a Schillview Garrett daughter at £2450 to the Colcloughs and Ann Harrison of Grantham sold a very smart and well bred heifer by Stantons Steady for the same money to Rob Ward.

Cows topped at £2060 for second calf daughter Wa-Del Hayden from AJ & MA Knowles of Preston selling to R Evans & Son, Ty Croes, Anglesey with a second calver from P&A Howard of Winsford going at £2050 and a second calf Baroque Allen from the Taylor’s going for £2000.

Very few coloured breed animals about but a nice run of Brown Swiss cross heifers from Bubney Farms Ltd., Whitchurch sold up to £1820.

IN-CALF AND SERVED HEIFERS

This section was well supported but generally not as dear as last month except for the best individuals, of which there were not too many about. The top seller was a Cogent Loaded daughter from Grosvenor Farms Ltd of Chester in-calf to an Angus for October and selling for £2120 to C & S Fitton & Son, Middlewich who also purchased the second top seller, an unregistered heifer from RS & PG Warburton of Warrington for £2000. Heifers due towards the end of the year were up to £1500.

MAIDEN HEIFERS

Maiden Heifers were a seasonal trade and as is always the case maidens always sell at lesser rates as the autumn approaches. The best sold well and topped at £1020 twice for a Crackhome Fever daughter from RC Rout & Son of Norfolk and a Comestar Lauthority daughter from JV & JE Allen of Tutbury, Burton-on-Trent.

HEIFER CALVES

Heifer calves were a much sharper trade this month and sold to £420 for a three week old daughter ME DAL Alliance from WA & D Dutton & Sons of Knutsford with plenty more of this age selling from £350 to £410.

STOCK BULLS

Only two forward and one sold and the one that did was a really nice 18 month old pedigree Simmental from S White of Tarporley which sold for £2500.
