Borderway Mart’s monthly Border and Lakeland Holstein Club show and sale included many smart, good uddered, productive fresh heifers which averaged just shy of £2000 with a top price of 2450gns. This was one of six very classy, milky animals with substance from the Wilson family of Wood Farm, Thursby. By Stantons Steady and with an 80-tonne, 13400kg homebred dam from the Cotton family, she now joins the herd of N & SJ Sanderson, Burtholme Farm, Brampton.
The Champion and Reserve Champion filled the next two top prices, albeit in reverse order. The Champion, under judge Robbie Scott, was a daughter of Glen Valley BW Captain from the Glenys family, bred and exhibited by Messrs Graham of Anguswell, Hethersgill, Carlisle. She sold for 2250gns to Fauld Farm Ltd, Longtown, Cumbria.
The Reserve Champion at 2400gns, one of the youngest heifers in the sale, was from the Wilsons of Skirwith Hall Farm. She was by Poly-Kow Mailing off an EX91 Mavis cow by Talent and sold to R Byers & Son, Woodslee, Canonbie.
Following the club sale came two production sale consignments of pure British Friesians. The Lawsons of ‘Lisnamulligan’ presented 30 maiden heifers from their highly regarded herd in Fife, which averaged over £1000 each to a top of 1470gns, which was paid for a three-quarter bred Dairy Shorthorn, 14-months old from the homebred sire Lisnamulligan Wallace. The pure Friesian heifers topped at 1350gns.
The other British Friesian consignment came from the well-known Oakalby Herd of Messrs Burroughs, who had made the long journey up to Carlisle from Suffolk with a mixture of fresh calved cows and heifers, in-calf heifers and maidens. The leading price of 2000gns was for a newly calved heifer from a long line of great cows of the Ruth family, going right back to Shopland breeding, sired by Oaklaby Moray Firth (Huddlesford Doraman x Blackside Holly 9 EX95).
