Excellent Sale of Bilsthorpe Herd ON FARM

Phillip Rhodes’ decision to disperse the milking portion & crop of served heifers from his Bilsthorpe herd on farm, near Lincoln on Tuesday this week looked to have been a very sound one and certainly dispelled the theory that any cattle East of Cheshire should be moved to a market for sale. Plenty of buyers and minimal stress on the cattle, shown to superb effect in their natural surroundings, resulted in an average of nearly £1800 for the milking herd and 30 prices at 2,000 guineas or more.

The sale started in great form with the remarkable 13 year old lot 1 making 2,800 guineas having just notched up 120 tonnes of milk. This was truly one the very best lot 1’s we have had the privilege to offer and she caught the eye on paper and looks of Herefordshire breeder Eryl Done, who is expanding his Wyevalley Dairy Genetics herd with exceptional ‘out-cross’ pedigrees. Bilsthorpe Sue 23 EX95-7E 4* had won a unique 4 Breed Championships at both the Newark & Notts and Lincolnshire shows, had bred outstanding sons and daughters and sold milking in her 9th lactation and ready to show again.

Eryl Done went on to buy 8 members of the Sue family including the top price of the day – Bilsthorpe Jeeves CT Sue GP82, a daughter of the Lot 1 cow, for 3,400 guineas. The family were keenly sought all day and the 25 ‘Sue’ lots averaged £2,119 and included the top priced calf, sold for 1,650 gns to Mr J.E.G James of the Chalkhill herd in Northamptonshire. She is a daughter of Bassingthorpe Bossman out of the VG88 Alliance Sue, that sold to Wyevalley for 2,400gns.

The calves were an excellent trade averaging £842 and served heifers met a more cautious trade with a top of 1,650 gns for a daughter of Laurin and averaging out at £1,423.

There were 26 buyers recorded, including several that wanted a load of cattle. The two main buyers were Andrew Avison from Leyburn, who took 29 head and Peter Dakin from Clitheroe who claimed 22.
