TALENT PEGGY TOPS CARHALL DISPERSAL AT 4000 GNS AT BEESTON CASTLE

The Dispersal of the entire Carhall Herd, the property of Ian and Joyce Mallinson and their son, Mark, of Low Northsceugh Farm, Armathwaite, Carlisle took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Tuesday, 24th September in front of a large crowd that travelled long distances from as far as Scotland to West Wales.

The sale came about as the Farm Business Tenancy at the farm was approaching the end of its term. Trade was particularly good for the best individuals of which there were any as well as for all the youngstock and in particular the calves. There were many great  ndividuals and there were many fine and highly respected cow families represented in the sale which attracted breeders and commercial milk producers from all over.

The top seller was the much admired Carhall Talent Peggy 2nd (VG88-3yr), a grand daughter of the imported Emlane Raider Pegasus (Ex94-3E) who was coming to the end of her second lactation having given 14233 kg. and was still giving 39.6 kg. She is due in the first week of December to Palermo and now joins the Woodhey Herd of Paul and Ruth Robinson and son, Mark at Faddiley Nantwich for 4000 gns.

Next at 3600 gns was a member of the herd’s top family; Carhall Goldwyn Elizabeth (VG88-2yr) was one of six VG daughters in the sale who were out of Messrs Mallinson’s noted show cow Carhall Lyster Elizabeth (Ex93-3E) who was a former Supreme

Champion at the National Holstein show; this third calf cow back in-calf for next March carrying a service to Klassic Big Time sold for 3600 gns to Peter Royle for his Bolshaw Herd based Nr.Rugby.

There were two that sold for 3500 gns. One of which was another of the Lyster cow’s daughters; this was Carhall Shottle Elizabeth 3rd (VG87),a second calf also back in-calf for March but this time carrying a service to Heavenly Golden Dreams which sold to Crossfell House Farm Ltd., of Kirby Thore, Penrith. The second at this figure was Carhall Mr. Sam Sonia (Ex91), a 6th gen (VG/EX) stemming from a noted Deslacs cow family and who freshened with her third calf in August. She sold to CT & FE James from Cardigan.

Four animals sold for 3100 gns each; the first two of these a VG86 heifer by the homebred Carhall Golddust and a VG86-2yr daughter of Knowledge from the Roxy family both sold to EM & JR Evans for their Priddbwll Herd at Oswestry. Jeff Kellett of Slaley, Hexham purchased another heifer (VG85-2yr) by Golddust from the Rosina family which is an eight generation VG/EX and Messrs James of Cardigan purchased a (VG85-2yr Talent from the Gail family that was also an 8th generation in the top two grades.

Served heifers sold to 1600 gns, maiden heifers to 1250 gns but the trade of the day was for the calves at foot which topped at 1800 gns for a six month old daughter of Mr Chassity Atwood Comet out of the 3600 gns Goldwyn Elizabeth selling to Showell Farms, Nuneaton.
