BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SHOW & SALE

WEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER 2013

Four dispersal consignments on top of the monthly Border and Lakeland club show and sale of pedigree Holstein dairy cattle ensured yet another busy day at the mart.

The trade was as brisk as ever for newly calved cows and heifers, and as sluggish as ever probably more so for lying off cattle, Anything even if guaranteed in calf to top bulls, that was due to calve January onwards represented terrific value. For example eleven or twelve hundred guineas would buy a young cow due early next year that, if fresh today would certainly have made over 2000gns. It’s frustrating for vendors and Auctioneers alike.

Back to the newly calved club sale, the small entry was compensated for being top quality. Seven heifers made over 2500gns to a top of 3600gns, for one of several well bred females from the Brewster family’s ‘Boclair’ herd near Glasgow. This overall Champion in the pre sale show is by the continental-American sire Mario Xacobeo, and from a homebred family, the Visions.

The reserve champion from the locally represented ‘Stowbeck’ herd of the Wilsons at Skirwith, made 2300gns, the buyer securing a GP83, August calved daughter of stock sire Stowbeck Lionel (Sprite x Principal Lillibet EX91) out of a Talent Galore cow, which traced way back to John Gray’s Brinkscott line.

The second highest price however was another fresh heifer from Boclair, ‘Boclair Leader Valentine’ off a high milk quality pedigree and made 2500gns was a very smart heifer from regular vendors, Messrs Milne & son near Elgin, Morayshire. This is also a daughter of Cogent Loader and comes from a homebred ‘Norah’ family full of high producing and long lasting cows.

The Steel family of ‘Kepculloch’ at Balfron, near Glasgow saw three of their beautifully bred heifers make 2450gns a piece.

The first of the four dispersal batches was from Messrs W D Halliday of Byreholm and comprised of 16 cows and heifers that missed the main sale a fortnight ago as they would have been too close to calving them. These sold to a top price of 2500gns for a 2 year old fresh heifer by Galastar Blueskye (Shottle son) off a dam by Bolton. Four of the batch of sixteen made over 2200gns.

Messrs Rome’s very well regarded south west Scottish ‘Carnewell’ herd was represented by 113 homebred pedigree Holstein cows and heifers. The two leading bids of 2500gns were for daughters of the stock sire Carnewell Tonic and of the American AI bull Regancrest Design. One was fresh with her 3rd calf in August, the other dry and due with her second calf in mid November. Twenty animals made over 2000gns but the price difference was evident again, with late lactation cows and heifers looking to be fantastic value for money.

It was a historic and sad day for the Inner Hebridean, Isle of Gigha in the pedigree dairy ring when the final batch of the ‘Hebrides’ herd was put under the hammer. Kenny and Betty Robison of Ardlamy Farm dispersed their milking portion a few years ago, retaining the followers, the last of which were sold late on Wednesday. The four fresh heifers averaged nearly £2600 for fabulous quality and very robust but not fancy breeding. The served and maiden heifers were equally keenly sought after as were the maidens and served heifers from the Lawsons ‘Sweethope’ herd.
