WINTON AND WOODMARSH DOMINATE WEXHAM CUP BULL SALE AT BEESTON CASTLE

The 62nd Annual Wexham Cup Show and Sale of Pedigree Holstein Bulls on behalf of members of the Western Holstein Club took place at Beeston Castle on Thursday last 7th November with a catalogued entry of 77 bulls with 71 forward on the day.

This year the judge was John Jamieson of the Dumfriesshire based Firth Herd who had a great lot of bulls put in front of him particularly in the Intermediate and Junior classes.

This year it was a great day for Peter Waring of the Beverley based Winton Herd who won both the Championship and Reserve Championship with entries from his noted herd. His Champion was Winton Farbrook, a son of Gillette Windbrook and bred from 6 generations of cows classified in the top two grades from the Farrah family. In reserve was Winton Europower, a son of Windy-Knoll-View Power with 9 straight Excellent dams from the Bricknell Ethel family.

Winton Farbrook was also Reserve for the prestigious Wexham Cup but the winner this year was the winner of the Junior bull class, Aintree Eveready ET from Aintree Holsteins Ltd., Wrexham.; this son of Toc-Farm Goldsun has 7 dams all scored Excellent from the wonderful Elegance family as well as 2 Excellent sisters and 4 (VG-2yr) sisters. The Wexham Cup is awarded to the bull who gains the most points on individual inspection as well as taking into account sires type merit, classification scores down the female line and production through PLI.

Generally the quality of bulls was pretty good but unfortunately trade was disappointing with just over half the bulls forward finding new homes. The older bulls and the younger bulls met with the poorest clearance rates but the intermediate bulls fared much better. The top prices were dominated by entries from the Winton and Woodmarsh Herds; the top price of 4100 gns was for the Reserve Champion, Winton Europower which sold to L Hadfield & son of Buxton.

Next at 4000 gns was the 1st prize senior bull, Woodmarsh Minder from M& JC Gould of Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury with their Niagra son from the Melody family whose 6 nearest dams gave lifetime productions totalling more than 500 tonnes of milk. He was the choice of Shutt and Mansell of Newport, Shropshire. Then came the Champion bull who sold for 3200 gns to HR Johnson & Sons of Longnor, Buxton. And it was another from Winton – Winton Rotate by the homebred Winton Pirate from the Roxy family that sold for 2700 gns to GW & J Mercer of Holcombe Brook, Bury for their Lumbcarr Herd. Also at this price was Woodmarsh Loxley, a Lauthority son from the Lyme family that sold to Breeze Farms Ltd., of Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire.
