Young Holstein Breeder Tops January Trade

The new selling format for the Border & Lakeland club sale got under way at Borderway on the 22nd January with the trade remaining similar to December with an overall average of £2176 for all lots forward including at the commercial milkers that followed.  The event was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and judged by Mr Robert Vetch owner of Ve-Tech herd in Ayrshire.

The demand for freshly calved young cows and heifers was competitive with numerous productive, good uddered cattle selling to a top of 3400gns. This bid secured a superbly bred stylish red & white Holstein heifer bred and shown by Gary McCormick of Brownfield Cottage, Dumfries. ‘Ceeingred Kite Scarlet Red’ traces back to the legendary ‘Stookey Fagan Scarlet Red EX94’ and was calved one month. The successful purchaser was Mr Dixon of Beech House, Cumbria. This heifer stood third place to the overall Champion which also sported an awesome pedigree ‘ Boclair Shottle Elegance 7’ also a month calved is of a VG87, 13870kg cow by ‘Sandy-Valley Bolton’, beautifully balanced with a sweet udder, producing 33kg daily she was knocked down for 2900gns (the second top price) to Messrs Thompson of Cowdenbeath, via a telephone bid.

Other leading prices included the 2550gns ‘Espland Talent Alison 5’ from regular consigner of top heifers Messrs Cannon of Espland Hill, Cumbria. Six weeks fresh she was also out of a high yielding VG Bolton cow. At 2500gns was a Roxie heifer from Brian Yates & Family of the noted ‘Logan’ Herd near Haugh of Urr, near Dalbeattie. This heifer is sired by the homebred outside son Logan ‘Ultimate’ and purchased by A Waddell & Sons, Dewshill Farm, Lanarkshire.

The top priced cow, at 2400gns was a fresh second calver ‘Wormanby Mr Sam Arnhilda 2’ whose dam is an excellent EX90-2E Final Cut daughter and grand dam is the famous Castlerhydd Arnhilda 16 EX94-4E 60 tonne.

Messrs Graves reputation of progressively dispersing their ‘Roansbank’ herd as the cows & heifers calve, was further enhanced by their 2450gn ‘Roansbank Jordan Celia’. From six generations of long wearing homebred cows her dam is an EX91 Shottle daughter with 11347kg at 4.59% butterfat and 3.125 protein backed up by two high VG cows with 14 lactations between them.

Two ET Red and White in-calf heifers, with excellent pedigrees, due soon to Lemington Cameron Red, both sold to 2000gns each.

It was a very successful sale, reflecting the current trade generally.
