Holstein bulls to 3,600gns at Kilrea
 
Quality bulls met a steady trade selling to a top of 3,600gns at Holstein NI’s recent show and sale, hosted by HA McIlrath and Sons at Kilrea Mart.
 
Auctioneer Mark Stewart confirmed a 74% clearance which saw 14 lots change hands to level at £1,869 per head.
 
The pre-sale show was judged by Jay Warden from the Ballygrainey Herd based at Bangor, County Down; and sponsored by Genus ABS who was represented by breeding adviser Billy Rodgers.

Sale leader at 3,600gns was the honourable mention award winner Glasson Broker bred by Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, County Armagh. This eighteen-month-old entry was sired by Picston Shottle, and is bred from six generations of VG and EX dams. His granddam is the noted Weeton Freeman EL Balise EX93, who has sons in AI. Highest bidder was David Hammond from Stewartstown, County Tyrone.
 
Next best at 2,450gns was the seventeen-month-old Mullaugher Alex ET consigned by David McNaugher, Aghadowey, County Londonderry. Sired by Pine Tree Sid, he is bred from Smithden Goldwyn Alexander ET who produced over 13,300kgs at 4.70% butterfat and 3.30% protein in her first 305-day lactation. This one sold to John McAleese from Aghadowey.
 
Bryce Kelso from Maghera, County Londonderry, paid out 2,350gns to secure the November 2012 born Majestic McCallum from Ian and Kenny Watson’s herd at Coleraine, County Londonderry. Bred from seven generations of EX dams, he has a PLI of +£202, and is a son of the NI-bred AI sire Ballycairn Tiergan.
The day’s supreme champion was Killane Topaz PLI £164, an October 2012 born entry bred by brothers Austin and David Perry, Ahoghill, County Antrim. Sired by the number one proven PLI sire Guarni, he is backed by nine generations of VG and EX dams from the noted Jeffrey Way Tina family. Buyer at 2,000gns was Richard Hamill from Portrush, County Londonderry.

Three lots came under the hammer at 1,800gns each.
