“Flo’s last ever son crowned Champion & top price”
The annual Spring Dairy Bull Show & Sale resulted in fifty bulls selling to average a very creditable £2744 a piece. Twenty young Friesian and Holstein bulls made 3000gns or more to a top of 5000gns. This bid, appropriately enough for the overall Champion, under Andrew Dennison’s expert eye was for “Berryhill Whirlwind” He is by the popular Canadian sire Gillette Windbrook and out of the phenomenal cow “Holmland Storm Flo EX94-5E LP100 tonne 7* brood cow” Twice an All Britain winner she has developed under the Wright Family’s ownership, into one of the greatest breeding cows for many years, and it was fitting that this, her last ever son to come on the market, “stole the show”.
Students of pedigree matters will have voted that the Reserve Champion was also a descendant from “Flo” being a great grandson by Windbrook from the Booth Family’s noted “Holstein” herd. He sold for 3400gns. In joint second place price-wise (at 4500gns) was a prime British Friesian, homebred on sire and dams side of his pedigree from the Lawson’s Lismulligan herd. By Lismulligan Mufasa and from an Excellent 92-5E member of the old Gay Family he was knocked down to Messrs J Dickinson of High House, Wigton. Also at 4500gns was a 14 month old son of Numero Uno from the Wilson’s local Warnelview herd. The dam, a young VG88(2yr) cow, Warnelview Jeeves Ruby 4 is backed by three successive Excellent 93 and 94 point cows with exceptional production and components.
After the sale Dairy Auctioneer Andrew Templeton of H&H was very up-beat “to sell the number of bulls to average not that far short of £3000 a piece at the Spring sale is exceptionally encouraging and underlines the current stability and optimism in the UK dairy industry. Although it was a great sale for most of the vendors, the buyers seemed equally as happy because there was a great variety of breeding and type to choose from and the prices paid were well within budget”.
