Sara Tops Aghavilly
Dispersal
With the UK dairy industry going
through a somewhat settled period for the first time in almost twenty years it
is not surprising then that this was the first dairy herd to be dispersed at
Borderway in 2014. The Aghavilly herd is owned and managed by Noel and
Stephen McCarragher, they have farmed at Fernycleugh Farm for the past fourteen
years and in that short time have developed and wonderful herd of high yielding
Holsteins. The sale featured no less than 88 animals giving over 40kgs
and a further 24 producing 60kgs plus.
Topping the sale was a classy red
factor Shottle daughter bred from the successful Copywood Integrity Sara
family. She had classified Excellent in her third lactation and was sold
dry due in June to Long P Red. She sold for 3,400gns to an undisclosed
buyer.
A fancy red second calved cow sired by
Ladino Park Talent sold for 2,900gns to Holehouse Farms, in Ayrshire.
This perfect uddered cow gave over 11,500kgs as a yearling and was sold giving
54kg.
One of the genuine stars of the sale
was Aghavilly Talent Esther Red EX90. She was warming to Goldenoaks Parma
PP Red and had already produced over 60 ton lifetimes selling for 2,800gns to P
Jones, Dumfries.
Mr Sanderson from Lanercost is always
partial to a super udder cow and he selected Aghavilly Haden Joyce, a January
calved cow giving 60kgs bred from two Very Good dams. Wal-Del Hayden
sired the majority of the top animals in the herd, his daughters far exceeding
his official type proof.
The first milking daughter of
Lady-Manors Shamrock sold as the very last milker in the sale for
2,700gns. She was bred from the Brigeen Hanover Debra family from a
Talent dam. The heifer was only a week fresh but displayed all the dairy
characteristics to develop into a Very Good two year old she was purchased by
Mr Stewart, Kirkubbin, Newtownards.
There was a nice group of in-calf
heifers selling to a top of 1,950gns for Aghavilly Dazzle Jill Red to average
£1759.
We would like to wish the McCarragher
family all the best with the future plans and look forward to hearing about how
well the Aghavilly animals are performing in their new homes.
