01-08-2014 - Sterling Jodie leads New Abbey dispersal

<<< Back to Sale Reports

The amazing pedigrees on offer at the Newabbey dispersal sale held at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 30th July involved most of the great Holstein cow families in the world today and attracted buyers from the length and breadth of the UK and Republic of Ireland. Topping at 18,000gns and averaging £2296 per life the sale was an overall outstanding success. Since establishing their Newabbey herd fourteen years ago Andrew and Alison Bunting had invested in the very best animals available in the UK. They had many successes breeding bulls for AI companies in the UK and mainland Europe, selling high priced heifers at the Black & White sales and winning a number of National Shows.

It was one of their stars from the show ring that stole the show. Sterndale Sterling Jodie Red had been unbeaten since they purchased her in 2012 as a young heifer winning championships at UK Dairy Expo and the Royal Highland Show. Jodie sold for 18,000gns to a Scottish and Welsh syndicate from the Logan, Meikle Firth and Wiltor Holstein herds.

Selling for 6,000gns was Knowlesmere Brax Missy a daughter of Braxton and granddaughter of Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy EX95. Gold Missy was Grand Champion at both World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair on 2011 and this was the first progeny to ever sell from this amazing cow. She was purchased by the Sloan family from Darnlaw Farm, Ayrshire.

Sahara Sanchez Ambrosia sold for 5,800gns to the Hollins family from Bate Farm in Staffordshire. Ambrosia scored VG88 as a two year old and was dry due with her second to Golden Dreams (sexed). Her Toystory dam sold for 27,000gns in the Smiddiehill dispersal the third dam being the All American & All Canadian Tri-Day Ashlyn.

One of the best investments for the Newabbey herd was the purchase of Tegan Bolton Lila Z in the Black & White sale for 17,500gns in 2008. Bolton Lila Z was a granddaughter of the All Canadian Lylehaven Lila Z EX94 who sold for over one million dollars in 2005. Since buying the Bolton the Buntings have sold a number of high priced bulls, heifers and embryos, their dispersal featured some of her outstanding progeny. Selling for 5,600gns to D. Buchanan, Co. Down was Newabbey Atwood Lila Z, her beautiful daughter by Atwood. She had a close to perfect Goldwyn daughter fresh in her second sell for 5,000gns to Mr Tucker near Swansea. A Braxton from this Goldwyn sold for 4,500gns to the Lawrie brothers near Lanark.

The biggest spender of the day was Mr McLean from the Priestland herd from the North of Ireland. He bought a number of excellent animals including Newabbey Lauthority Beauty for 5,000gns. Beauty displayed all the qualities to develop into a big league show cow in the future and is bred from the famous Rainyridge Tony Beauty family. Another one of Mr McLean’s purchases was Newabbey Windhammer Jo Flo selling for 5,000gns. She was sired by Windhammer and bred from a VG87 Jordan that sold in the Black & white sale for 12,000gns next dam is the National Holstein Champion Berryholme Shottle Flo.

A fancy milking heifer by Damion from the Bosdale Storm Rose family sold for 5,000gns to the Robson family near Preston. Her grand dam was the Excellent 95 point Ridgefield Gibson Rosy sister to Progress Rose who sold for 18,000gns in the Ridgefield dispersal.

Andrew & Alison would like to thank everyone who attended and bought cattle from their dispersal. They are looking forward to seeing how they develop in their new homes and wish everyone much success in the future.
