The September Border & Lakeland Club sale took
place at Borderway on Wednesday 10th a week earlier than normal
resulting in the smallest consignment of heifers for just over six years. Despite the lack of quantity there was an
incredible offering of quality heifers producing 35kgs and above and averaging
£1890 a rise of £167 on the month.
Despite the recent down turn in the milk and dairy markets demand for
freshly calved cows and heifers remains strong and they remain excellent value
for money still just over £200 less than this time last year.
The show was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group
and Cogent and judged by John Jamieson for the Firth Holstein herd in
Annan. His overall Champion went to
Cunswick Lionheart Belle consigned by JW Graves, Tallentire, she was sired by
Denmire Bridge End Lionheart and bred from two Very Good dams. She now joins the Woodcatt herd for 1,850gns. His Reserve Champion went to Carhall
Sensation Sonia bred by Ian & Mark Mallinson and exhibited by Steven
Carruthers who purchased her at their dispersal in 2013. This perfect uddered heifer was just a week
fresh and bred from six generations of Excellent or Very Good cows going back
to the Deslacs herd in Quebec, Canada.
She sold for a joint top price of £1950 to Mr A McCamley of Knockshiffnock,
Ayrshire.
The Errolston herd of Brain & Craig Davidson
sold a number of excellent uddered and very milky heifers topping at 1,950gns
for Errolston Deann Lilian a daughter of England-Schill Deann and bred from
seven generations of Excellent or Very Good cows. She was purchased again by Mr A McCamley.
Skirwith Hall Farms sold a number of super young
heifers very typical of what buyers have come to expect from this top herd. These
heifers were all bred from pedigrees with outstanding lifetime yields and
averaged over £1900.
Future dairy sales at Borderway include a Super
Young-Stock sale on the 24th September with 155 heifers already
consigned from four leading herds. This
sale comprises 61 in-calf heifers due from October – December 15 recently
served heifers and 64 bulling heifers and a number of calves. On the 1st October the Hawkbarrow
dispersal takes place featuring 133 cows and heifers in milk plus another 100
head in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day.
