The Lawson family, Wharfedale, swept the board when
producing both the champion and reserve champion at September’s main
Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton on Monday.
Their champion under judge Aubrey Greenhalgh, Preston, was the
first prize freshly calved cow, Newbanks Gertie 318. By the legendary
Genus sire, Picston Shottle, the 22 days’ calved champion is currently
giving 38kg and sold for £2000 to the Sowray family, Bishop Thornton.
Top price of the day at £2200 fell to the third prize heifer, 14
days calved and giving 31kg, from Brian Moorhouse, who runs the Aireburn
pedigree herd in Bell Busk. Aireburn Toyota Christine joined Wilmot
Blockley in Tarvin, Chester.
The same buyer also went to £2100 to acquire another freshly calved
heifer, Stainbank Roxy 29, by Burlane Tennyson, from the Stainbank
pedigree Holstein Friesian herd of Robin Jennings and family, South
Stainley.
The Lawsons’ first prize freshly calved heifer and reserve
champion, Newbirks Blueblood 867, nine days calved and giving 28kgs, by
another Genus sire, Lynncrest Zebra, returned home.
Pedigree fresh calved heifers averaged £1834.
