The Wright
Marshall Month End Dairy Sale at Beeston Castle Auction attracted an entry of
158 Head of which 139 were forward on the day. Just as luck would happen
another milk price cut was announced on the morning of sale which no doubt
effected the number of people in attendance, particularly locals. However
several had travelled long distances to attend the sale and there were three
different buyers from Scotland, two from West Wales and one from North Devon
all of whom made massive contributions to the sale. Yes trade was less, and not
surprisingly so, but only four animals failed to find new homes.
UK COWS AND MILKING HEIFERS
The
Sale featured sections for the Western Club’s Focus Milk cattle and also a
section for well bred individuals in the Glorious Milkers category as well as
the usual monthly consignment of commercial cows and heifers from our regular
vendors. The top price was £2700 for Burnbrae Hayden Vaakje from Jack and
Barclay Taylor of Myddle, Shrewsbury. This heifer by Wa-Del Hayden is bred from
10 generations of Excellent dams and also has two Excellent sisters. She was
purchased by Les Trow of Shrewsbury.
The
next six top prices all came from the noted Rowarton Herd of Roger and Pat
Sutton and sons, Greg and Andrew of Astbury, Congleton and what a super run of
heifers they were. Members of their superb Annette family were in particular
demand; the Sutton’s top price was £2550 for the Crackholm Fever daughter,
Fever Annette 2nd who has a VG88 dam and then five generations of
straight Excellents and was purchased by J Royall & Sons of Alsagers Bank,
Stoke-on-Trent. Brian Parker of Haughton, Stafford purchased three of this
group at £2400(twice) and £2250 for daughters of Zebra, Baltimore and Bossman
whilst Dafydd Hughes of Manordeilo, Carmarthenshire purchased an Alta Delwin
daughter at £2350 and another Baltimore at £2250
Two
other heifers broke the £2k barrier; Steve Garth of Great Eccleston sold a
Woodmarsh Metallic daughter at £2100 and Mark Mottershead of Whitchurch sold a
heifer by Sandy Valley X Ray at £2050.
Very
few cows on offer and these sold to £1900 for a second calver by Askew Reece
from Mark Mottershead selling to Arthur Nicholas, Tarporley.
EUROPEAN HEIFER SALE
There
were two major consignments from the Osnabruck Herd Book, Germany and Kurt
Nisgaard Aps, Denmark and the quality of both groups was exceptionally high. As
a result there was plenty of bidding for them from start to finish particularly
from buyers who were previous purchasers and have obviously been pleased with
their subsequent performance. The Osnabruck collection were a super group of
heifers and their top seller was a daughter of Wizzard bred from 6 generations
of VG/Ex dams from the noted ‘D’ family at KNS Holsteins, Schiplage, Osnabruck;
purchasing this heifer at £2250 was were Messrs Royall of Alsagers Bank. Local
breeder Steve Armstrong purchasing for his Armsdale Herd at Bunbury
acquired nine heifers from Osnabruck
including a four generation VG Maxim heifer at £2100 and a Xaver daughter out
of VG85 Icefyre dam giving 40 kg at £2000.
The
most bidding all day was for the Danish heifers from Nisgaard Aps who this
month consigned the best group yet since their first consignment in May earlier
this year. The Holstein heifers which are solid and wide, have good udders and
aimed very much at the commercial market sold to £1750 twice for daughters of
VH Onside Viken Opell and DRH Basta. They also include in every consignment
some pure Danish Reds and Crossbreds; these sold up to £1650.
