SNOWMAN SPARKLES AT DILANDY HOLSTEIN SALE 3700 GNS TOP
SELLER HEADS TO CARMARTHEN
The Dispersal of virtually the entire milking portion of the
DILANDY Herd of Pedigree Holstein cattle at Beeston Castle Auction, Cheshire on
behalf of Andrew Shakeshaft of Whattall Farm, Colemere, Nr.Ellesmere Shropshire
attracted a huge crowd. The ring was packed to the rafters with commercial milk
producers and breeders; many had travelled great distances to the sale but the
great majority stayed local and were sold into Cheshire, Staffordshire and
Shropshire. However buyers were also recorded from Essex, Warwickshire, Devon
and Carmarthenshire.
This was a good herd of cattle, managed very well and in
good condition and were only being sold because of the loss of the farm’s milk
contract which was finishing at the end of March.
There was plenty of bidding right from the start and the
older cows sold very well, particularly those that were fresh and those that
were guaranteed back in-calf. However when the younger cows and milking heifers
came into the ring, bidding reached another level and prices from 1800 gns to
2200 gns were the norm rather than the exception. In all 21 animals sold for
bids of 2000 gns or more.
The top seller was one of the animals with the best
pedigrees in the catalogue; Lillyhall Snowman Faith ET (GP84-2yr) was purchased
as a calf and is a daughter of the great Snowman and bred from 5 generations of
VG/EX dams from the Ralma Juror Faith family. She calved in May and was bred
back in December to Mogul; she sold for 3700 gns and was one of several head
purchased by Roosta Holsteins of Carmarthenshire. They also purchased two
milking heifers by Wyman, both of which calved in September for 2750 gns and
2500 gns respectively.
Also selling at 2700 gns was the very well bred Dilandy
Captain Tabitha 2nd (VG85-2yr), a heifer that calved in early November and
sired by Glen Valley BW Captain; she is out of a (GP83) dam who is full sister
to the reigning Royal Highland Show Interbreed Champion, Dilandy Debonair
Tabitha Red (EX92). Signing the cheque for this good heifer were Smith Farms (Clacton)
Ltd., for their Wigboro Herd based at Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Another (VG85-2yr) heifer that caught the eye
was Dilandy Goldfish Bibby that calved in October and was sold for 2450 gns
giving 38 kg to JF Owen, Overton-on-Dee, Wrexham who also purchased a November
calved Captain heifer at 2250 gns.
Another Wyman that calved in November also made 2250 gns and
she was the top priced lot purchased by CV Whilock of Ipstones Edge,
Stoke-on-Trent who was the volume buyer of the sale purchasing a total of 27
Head.
