Holstein champion secures 3,500gns at Kilrea bull sale
 
 
Supreme champion was Glasson Gomez bred by Philip Haffey, Portadown. Included are judge William Kerr, Cloughmills; auctioneer Mark Stewart; and sponsor Billy Rodgers, Genus ABS. 
 
Trade for pedigree black and white bulls reached a ceiling of 3,500gns at Holstein NI’s March show and sale, hosted by HA McIlrath and Sons Ltd at Kilrea Mart.
 
Sale leader was the supreme overall champion Glasson Gomez PLI £268 bred by Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown. Born in September 2013 he is by Bertaiola Mincio, and out of the home-bred Glasson J Goldwyn Gail EX92 who averaged 10,628kgs at 4.95% butterfat and 3.58% protein in four 305-day lactations. Backed by five generations of EX dams from a high genomics family he sold to J and M Wilson, Broughshane.
 
Second highest bid of the day 2,700gns, was paid to Ronald McLean, and sons Malcolm and Barry, Donaghmore, for the November 2013 born Relough Dignity PLI £216. Sired by Gillette Windbrook, his dam is the EX95 Relough Dante Dana 3 who averaged 11,758kgs at 4.95% and 3.30% protein in four 305-day lactations. Buyer was Norman Bell, Cookstown.
 
Following close behind at 2,650gns was the honourable mention award winner Glasson Baton PLI £137 from Philip and Simon Haffey’s herd. Sired by Maple Downs IGW Atwood, he was bred from Glasson Journalist Buttercup EX92. In six 305-day lactations she averaged 9,042kgs at 5.3% butterfat and 3.51% protein. This December 2013 born entry sold to A Gaston, Glarryford.
 
New breeder Aidan McAFee, Aghadowey, realised 2,400gns for the Co-op Bosside Massey son Drumeil Dodger ET £341. His dam Majestic Earnit Annette is the number one GTPI Earnit daughter Europe, and is a maternal sister to the 75,000 dollar Morning View Toystory Amaya EX92. Born in October 2013, he was snapped up by M Millar, Coleraine.
 
The October 2013 born Picston Shottle son Mullaugher Scott came under the hammer at 2,000gns David McNaugher, Aghadowey.  Buyer was CR McIntyre, Bushmills.
 
The pre-sale show was judged by William Kerr from Cloughmills, and generously sponsored by Genus ABS.
The reserve championship went to Carsehall Kaboom ET £301, a July 2013 born Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul son from J Craig and Sons, Limavady. He sold at 1,650gns to D Boyd, Ballyclare.
 
Averages: 19 bulls £1,940 (+£71).
