Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a remarkable trade, considering current difficult dairy industry times, on Thursday 30th July at Hewletts Farm Stalbridge Dorset for the Adair families 500 head dairy dispersal. An exceptional crowd due 61 purchasers from 8 counties to include Cornwall, Sussex and Carmarthen to witness the twin of Shower Red yearling heifers with a PLI of £121 and off of no less than 9 generations of Ex or VG dams sell for 3,500gns. In addition 10 further lots from this commercial herd sold for in excess of 2,000gns to a top of 2200gns on two occasions for Thameshead bred heifers “Altaross Marjorie 121st” and “Twist Mischa 2nd” that sold freshly calved having been purchased a bullers. On the day the 45 calved heifers produced a phenomenal trade to average an impressive £1700.
Dairy cows sold to 2100gns for” IAHMayfield Winsconsin Mia Red” the Red and White fresh second calver with other Mayfield bred cows purchased from the Pirbright herd dispersal last autumn at 2050gns twice. The homebred commercial 3rd calver that was giving 53kgs sold for 1850gns. The Vortex bred bulls from local breeder Alan King had worked well in the herd and “Vortex Lancia ET” sold for 1500gns through the ring.
The red & white incalf heifer “IAHMayfield Winsconsin Robin R Red” due August sold to 1600gns with other incalf heifers close to their work at 1450 and 1400gns. Homebred bulling heifers by “Ladson AltaLaddie” sold to 860gns with Brown Swiss x yearling heifers at 760gns and red and white heifer calves by Freddie Raeman at 400gns. Close behind at 300gns was the red and white June born bull calf out of the top priced cow.
Over 500 dairy cattle were put through the ring in just under 6 1/2 hours to bring to an end over 50 years of dairy farming by the Adairs at Hewletts Farm and see them on their way to New Zealand. In these uncertain times the following impressive averages were achieved:-
