<<< Back to Sale Reports

With over 50 buyers from 22 counties spanning all points of the UK and one from Eire, Messrs A.R Hall & Sons of Southwold, Suffolk’s choice of the central location of Cirencester for their big sale looked to have been absolutely correct with a result that puts the sale at the top of the industry results this year. This was the first major dairy dispersal held in the market and the facilities were praised by all who attended and the bespoke parlour worked a treat under expert operatives. The volume of buyers was impressive with great local support, a determined contingent from East Anglia who took 66 head back, several buyers from Wales also from Ireland (North & South) and Scotland. The great quality of the Reydon herd was of course the main feature, with an 11,000 litre herd average and an enviable health status from a TB4 area. The management under long time herdsman Jim Ryan was of a high calibre with marvellous individuals in all age groups. Leading the trade was ‘cover girl’ Reydon Shottle Harriet 67 VG87, a fresh second lactation cow of great quality. She gave 11,889kg as a heifer and sold giving 54kg daily on 2x milking. She was from the herd’s best cow family and one of 70 Shottle daughters catalogued. After a fierce tussle of bidding she was knocked down to John Cawston to return to Suffolk to join his Poringland herd. Her 2 month old calf at foot by Goldfish topped the calf section at 1500 guineas, selling to Jonathan Cope from Whitchurch. Another Shottle daughter – Reydon Shottle Beauty VG89, whose dam was a 110 tonne producer from the late Chris May’s Hazelden herd, tracing back to the Saltoke herd in Lancashire realised second top price of 3,600 guineas. She also travels back to East Anglia to join Coastal Holsteins. The superbly bred Reydon Million Nancy 37 VG862yr was much admired and was the third animal to sell for 3000+ fetching 3,200gs, due in June to Silver. She travels to Wales along with several others. One of the features of the sale was the trade for calves which averaged £765. These peaked at 1500 as mentioned above with another ‘Goldfish’ daughter making 1080 guineas to Nigel Martin & Son from Co. Monaghan along with 26 other young stock. Served heifers were also in much stronger demand with heifers due from May to November averaging over £1400 with 12 selling for 1500 guineas + including 2 reaching 1750 guineas, both again by the popular Goldfish. Maiden heifers flew as well, on the back of the fizzing calf trade and averaged £915. These peaked at 1700 guineas for a full sister to the top priced Shottle Harriet. She joins the Wigboro herd of the Smith family from Essex, who were keen bidders at several of the best lots. Many buyers were stunned by the level of trade and returned home empty handed. Fear not there will surely be more herds for sale at Cirencester…. Averages: 299 Lots (inc 42 ’A’ lots @ £740.50), avg. £1,373.74. AUCTIONEERS: NORTON & BROOKSBANK with VOYCE PULLIN
