Freshly calved cows and heifers met a good trade with the majority selling between 1,300-1,550gns and produced a top price of 1,580gns for Lamb Topshot Graceful the calved heifer from R T Cox. Rob Wilcox’s heifer Sandpark Twist Jasmine 3 sold for 1,550gns with others to 1,500gns from Church Farm and F E Luff.

Cows topped at 1,480gns for H J Baldwin’s second calver giving 37kg from his excellent consignment of cows and heifers. Other cows to 1,450gns for ‘Walkabout Dimagio Broom’ and 1,400gns twice.

A feature of the sale was the dispersal from R H P T Coffin’s of Holstein Friesians, which sold to a top of 1,450gns for a second lactation cow that calved last September. A heifer due in October sold to 1,400gns, others 1,340gns and 1,320gns twice reflecting the increase demand for September calving cows and heifers.

A good show of young stock saw one of the best in-calf heifer trades of the year so far with 1,400gns achieved for two Destry daughters bred from the Chedhunt herd and sold by F E Luff. The same vendor sold other heifers to 1,380gns twice. Off lying heifers were in demand to 1,300gns for a Cogent Twist daughter Roundhillsfarm Veronica from W Green and Sons. Bulling heifers sold to 800gns twice for Lewis Farms Ltd who also had the top priced yearlings at 620gns twice, both by Bolton. Auctioneer Derek Biss commented: ‘The younger they got the dearer they got,’ with the 50 yearlings forward averaging over £450.
