Top Of £2200 For Brady Heifer From Sterndale
The Wright Marshall Month End Dairy Sale including special sections for the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk Sale attracted an entry of 65 cows and heifers for its June event. In addition the sale included the dispersal sales of the in-calf and maiden heifers of the Leesemanor and Daneview herds for the Lomas family of Byley, Middlewich and also the Forte herd for the Nottage family of Seething, Norwich.

This was the first dairy sale in the new dawn for British Agriculture following the Brexit decision by the UK to leave the EU and it certainly caused a major boost to confidence for the immediate future of milk production in the UK. A good crowd were in attendance and bidding was as fast as we have had it this year. The phone was particularly busy prior to the sale with as much interest from milk producers keen to secure cattle to replace the cows they have culled.

The trade resulted in a significant upturn in prices and although there were only 65 milkers forward no less than 17 made £1,600 or more. The top seller was lovely and very well bred heifer from Bill Nadin of Earl Sterndale, Buxton; this was for his Sterndale Brady Papoose a daughter of Butz-Butler Atwood Brady and bred from 15 generations of Excellent or Very Good dams. The hammer was knocked down at £2200 to John Williamson of Austerson, Nantwich who was buying for a client.

Next in the price list was the lead heifer from the consignment of 15 heifers from regular consigner Gavin Struthers of Windygates, Fife. This was for his Annshill Drayman Roxie, a Bassingthorpe Drayman daughter sold giving 32 kg and purchased by V W Truman and Partners of Melton Mowbray. Gavin Struthers also sold Hailstone Krusader Bracelet by O-Bee Krusader a heifer giving 38 kg which sold to Les Trow of Shrewsbury for £1,900 and another at £1,700 to J J & A S Nicholas of Tarporley. Marshall and Patsy Barnett were also in the money selling their very well bred Twemlow Lauthority Ambrosia 2 to Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas of Kidwelly Joylan Farms of St Michaels Preston also had a good day selling their Fortland Rice daughter Joylan FR Belinda to Les Trow for £1,800 and a Mincio daughter at £1,700 to the Thomas’. The only other at £1,700 was Sandcross Merchant Signet 2 from Frank Sanderson which sold to Wilf Oakes of Lach Dennis.

A small entry of cows topped at £1,650 for a fresh second calver from Graham and Barbara Bell of Ridley, Tarporley and a lovely group of springing heifers from Colin Pym of Barrow Chester sold to £1,400.

The sale concluded with the two young stock dispersals. In-calf heifers from the Lomas’ topped at £1,380 for Leesemanor Asterix Mary whilst their maidens were led by Daneview Jayz Joy which sold at £950. The Nottage’s in-calf heifers sold to £1,150 for Forte PS Elegance whilst their maidens topped at £1,000 for the August 2015 born Forte DJ Elegance.
