Averages: 142 head £1,252; 117 cows £1,315; 14 in-calf heifers £1,220

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a super trade for quality cattle at the dispersal of the milking and in-calf heifer portion of the Yardgrove herd for David and Oliver Coombes on Tuesday 26th July. Winners of the 2016 Dorset Small Herds in this year’s Holstein Club competition, the 142 cows and heifers on offer attracted no less than 40 successful bidders from across the Country, Wales and Ireland.

Nine of the cows and heifers on offer exceeded 2,000gns to a top of 3,600gns for Yardgrove Goldwyn Ona VG87 with a PLI of £268. She was from the herds show family and joins Designer Holsteins in Sussex. Four members of this family exceeded the 2,000gns barrier with the second calver Fever Ona VG87 at 2,500gns, Zelgadis Ona VG86 the calved heifer at 2,150gns and the in-calf heifer Fever Ona 2nd at 2,300gns.

The Linlake SH Talent Jeanette EX90 from 10 generations of VG or Excellent that was due to her fourth in August sold for 2,600gns to Ireland. At the same price was the second calver Penrikka Dempsey Inka 2 VG88 who goes to join the Wiltor herd in Wales. At 2,500gns was Yardgrove Seagual Regina VG87 who was third in the Holstein South West Heifer class and joins the Dymond’s of Honiton.  Linlake Shottle G Wonder EX92 sold for 2,300gns and Yardgrove Seagual Fairy VG88 for 2,100gns.

When considering the small number catalogued, the loose house status and the ongoing difficulty in the dairy industry, very creditable averages were achieved.
